2-Hydroxy-1-naphthylacetic acid is a fluorescent probe that has been shown to bind to the hydroxyl group of amines and serum albumin. It has been used in studies of the bovine microenvironment, as an antibacterial agent, and as a fluorescent probe for studying kinetics. The fluorescence intensity increases when 2-hydroxy-1-naphthylacetic acid binds to the amines or serum albumin because it is a neutral probe. This binding leads to conformational changes in the protein structure, which affects the fluorescence emission intensity.
