The mechanism of action involves a hydrogen bond between the aldehyde group and the protonated amine group of a lysine residue in the bacterial cell wall. 4-Hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde is not active against bacteria that have an electron transfer system or high redox potential. In this case, an electron acceptor such as oxygen must be present for the reaction to occur.
