2-(6-hydroxy-2,4,5,7-tetraiodo-3-oxo-[3H]-xanthen-9-yl)-benzoicacid disodiumsalt (also known as Erythrosine) is a fluorescent dye that is used clinically as a diagnostic agent. It binds to fatty acids and can be used to identify cells in histological slides. This drug is also used to treat viral infections by inhibiting the replication of viruses such as HIV, herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2, cytomegalovirus, and influenza A virus. Erythrosine is also used for its anti-aging properties. It has been shown to have antihyaluronidase effects and may inhibit the symptoms of aging by increasing skin elasticity.
Erythrosine is often used as a calibration standard for fluorescence probes because it emits at 662 nm in the presence of ultraviolet light at 365 nm wavelength
