2-(4-Hydroxyphenoxy)-propionic acid is a chiral aromatic hydrocarbon that can be found in pseudomonas strains. It is metabolized by the microbial metabolism of chlorine atom, carbon source, and aliphatic hydrocarbon. The metabolic pathway involves hydrolysis product and the enantiomer (R or S) of 2-(4-hydroxyphenoxy)-propionic acid depends on the strain of bacteria. 2-(4-Hydroxyphenoxy)-propionic acid is toxic to animals and humans if ingested in large amounts, but has not been shown to be carcinogenic in animal studies.
