It has been shown to have biological properties, such as meiosis, and to be involved in the regulation of ion transport. Hydroxybisnorcholenic acid is also one of the major components of the saponified product of cholesterol. The molecule is a target tissue for control levels of biochemical analysis and modulation by hormones. Hydroxybisnorcholenic acid can be converted into aminosterol, which then undergoes additional conversion to cholesterol.
