The protonation of the hydroxyl group has been shown to be dependent on pH, which may be due to proton transfer reactions. 6-Hydroxyquinoline also forms acid complexes with metal ions such as iron(III) and copper(II), which is a photophysical reaction that produces acidic products. Hydrated, or water bound, 6-hydroxyquinoline molecules absorb light in the ultraviolet region at wavelengths below 300 nm.
