This compound is a hydrophobic molecule that forms micelles with fatty acids at high concentrations, which provides antimicrobial activity by disrupting the lipid bilayer membrane of bacteria. Hexadecyltrimethylammonium p-toluenesulfonate has a phase transition temperature of about 50 degrees Celsius, which means it can be used in liquid form at room temperature.
