Hexyl butyrate has been shown to inhibit the activity of several enzymes that are involved in bacterial cell wall biosynthesis and may be used as an antimicrobial agent. The structural similarity between hexyl butyrate and hexanoic acid allows them to bind to the same receptors on cells, which may account for their antimicrobial effects.
