The synthesis of 9-heptadecanol can be achieved by reacting benzothiadiazole with an ethanol extract of coconut oil, giving a high yield of product. 9-Heptadecanol is also stereogenic, with the configuration at carbon atom C9 being R or S. This property influences the activation energy for photoinduced electron transfer from this compound to other acceptors in solar cells.
