5-Hydroxyhydantoin is a chemical species that has been shown to be reactive with DNA, leading to oxidative damage. It is an intermediate in the formation of DNA adducts and can be found in cancer tissue. 5-Hydroxyhydantoin is often used as a reactant for analytical methods, including gas chromatography and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The carbonyl group of 5-hydroxyhydantoin can be observed in the 1H NMR spectra. The chemical reacts with nucleic acids by forming covalent bonds between the hydroxyl group and the deoxyribose sugar or phosphate groups. This reaction converts damaged DNA into neutral species, which are less harmful to cells than damaged DNA.
