Hypaconitine is a cytosolic Ca2+ antagonist that can be used to study the mechanism of cardiac arrhythmias. Hypaconitine binds to the sarcoplasmic reticulum and blocks the release of Ca2+, which increases the concentration of intracellular Ca2+. This increase in intracellular Ca2+ inhibits cardiac contractility, leading to cardiac arrest. Hypaconitine has also been shown to inhibit growth factor-β1 (GF-β1). It has a chemical structure similar to aconitine, which is a toxic compound found in plants such as monkshood. Aconitine inhibits mitochondrial function by binding to polymerase chain reaction (PCR) DNA polymerase and blocking DNA synthesis. Hypaconitine also binds to PCR DNA polymerase and inhibits DNA synthesis, but does not inhibit mitochondrial function.
