L-b-Homoalanine hydrochloride is a prochiral amino acid that is synthesized by the chemoenzymatic process. The synthesis involves a sequence of reactions, which is optimized to achieve high selectivity and yield. The process starts with the isolation of L-alanine from aqueous solutions using ion exchange chromatography. This is followed by the conversion of L-alanine to its enantiomer, L-b-Homoalanine hydrochloride, using an organic solvent and a lipase enzyme. Finally, the desired product is isolated by crystallization or recrystallization.
