2,5-Hexanediol is a reactive chemical that has been shown to react with copper chloride to form the corresponding amide. The reaction mechanism for this is not yet elucidated but it is suggested that the amide forms from an initial nucleophilic attack on the carbonyl carbon by a hydroxyl group from water. The amide also has been found to react with nitrogen atoms in protein molecules, which can lead to monoclonal antibodies binding. 2,5-Hexanediol is used as an antimicrobial peptide and has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth through fatty acid glycol esters and metal hydroxides. Hydrogen bonding between the 2,5-hexanediol molecule and water molecules may play a role in antimicrobial activity.
