2-Hydroxy-3-methoxy-3,3-diphenylpropionic acid (2HMP) is a chiral pyrimidine derivative that is synthesized from the reaction of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol with 3,3'-dimethoxybenzaldehyde. The optical purity of 2HMP can be determined by measuring the flow rate of the compound as it passes through a column packed with silica gel using a liquid chromatography method. This compound has been shown to have nucleophilic properties and can react with an electron rich aromatic ring in an enantioselective ring opening reaction. 2HMP is also used in organic synthesis to produce optically pure products in high yields.
