It has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against bacterial strains (e.g., Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis) and fungi (e.g., Candida albicans). The major reaction mechanism involves the formation of hydroxyl groups from hydroxyacetone by reaction with trifluoroacetic acid and radiation.
