1-Hexadecene is a compound that has been proposed as a model system for studying the effects of chemical structure on the reactivity of fatty acids. It can be synthesized by reacting copper chloride with zirconium oxide in an alkaline solution. 1-Hexadecene is soluble in organic solvents, such as benzene and chloroform. In aqueous solutions, it undergoes hydrolysis to form hydrogen bonds and covalent linkages with water molecules. When heated, it decomposes into sodium carbonate and hydrogen chloride. The reaction mechanism involves nucleophilic substitution of chlorine atoms from the hexadecylic acid molecule with hydroxide ions from water molecules to produce the corresponding salts.
