It is an epigenetic modification that alters gene expression without changing the DNA sequence. 5-Hydroxymethylcytosine has been shown to be a potential biomarker of cellular transformation and is involved in axonal growth, transcriptional regulation, and leukemia inhibitory factor. 5-Hydroxymethylcytosine binds to nuclear dna, which inhibits replication by binding to the duplexes of dna (the double helix) and halting transcriptional elongation. 5-Hydroxymethylcytosine also binds cell factor, which is necessary for cell proliferation and differentiation.
