2-Hydroxy-5-methylpyridine is a ruthenium complex that has been shown to be an effective anticancer drug. It selectively binds to DNA and inhibits the synthesis of RNA, leading to cell death. 2-Hydroxy-5-methylpyridine is an unsolvated compound with a carbonyl group and water molecule. The stereoselective binding of 2-hydroxy-5-methylpyridine to DNA occurs at the C8 position in the purine ring. It can be synthesized by reacting sodium hydroxide solution with chloromethyl methyl ether, followed by hydrolysis of the reaction product with hydrochloric acid. 2HMP can also be prepared from halogen compounds such as bromine or chlorine gas in a xylene solution with sodium hydroxide solution.
