Descripción:3-Hydroxy-6-methylpyridine is a metabolite of the amino acid L-alanine. It has been shown to be hepatoprotective in a model system and to inhibit the allergic response. 3-Hydroxy-6-methylpyridine has also been shown to protect cells against oxidative damage by metal ions, as well as metabolic disorders such as diabetes. This compound is not active in competitive inhibition because it does not bind to the same site on the enzyme as the substrate. 3-Hydroxy-6-methylpyridine has also been shown to have neuroprotective effects, which may be due to its ability to inhibit acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter important for memory and learning.
