It has been shown to be more effective than other surfactants, such as sodium carbonate, for the detection of heparin in human serum. Hexadecyltrimethylammonium hydrogen sulphate also has been shown to have a catalytic activity that is similar to that of palladium-catalyzed coupling, which can be used for the synthesis of oligosaccharides. Hexadecyltrimethylammonium hydrogen sulphate can be used to produce second-order rate constants by following a liquid chromatography method and measuring light emission. This surfactant will cause hydrochloric acid to form when mixed with chloride and sodium carbonate, allowing it to function as a homogeneous catalyst.
