4-(Hydroxymethyl)-3-methoxyphenoxyacetic acid is a metal chelate with a molecular formula of C8H11NO2. It is used as an analytical reagent and is commercially available in the form of its sodium salt. 4-(Hydroxymethyl)-3-methoxyphenoxyacetic acid reacts with halides to form trihalide salts, which can be determined by titration calorimetry, redox potential measurements, or x-ray crystal structures. This compound also acts as a ligand for metal ions such as copper(II), iron(III), and nickel(II). 4-(Hydroxymethyl)-3-methoxyphenoxyacetic acid has been used to prepare glycol ethers that are soluble in water. The chemical reaction mechanism for this process includes hydrogen bonding and nucleophilic attack by hydroxyl anions on electrophilic carbonyl groups.
