H-His(3-Me)-OH is a potential biomarker for the assessment of protein metabolism. It is a metabolite of histidine and has been shown to be excreted in urine at higher levels than other amino acids. H-His(3-Me)-OH has also been shown to have a kinetic profile that is different from other amino acid metabolites. This difference may be due to the presence of an asymmetric carbon atom at position 3, which can exist in two tautomers. The fluorescence detector is able to distinguish between these two tautomers and quantify them separately. The use of this metabolite as a marker for protein metabolism has not yet been explored in humans.
