Hydantoin-5-acetic acid is a molecule that has been studied for its potential use in the stabilization of polymers and plastics. It has shown antibacterial activity against certain bacterial strains including Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The molecule has the ability to coordinate with metal ions such as copper, zinc, and iron. The protonation state of the molecule is dependent on the pH of the environment. Hydantoin-5-acetic acid can exist in two tautomeric forms: hydantoin or 5-hydantoin. Hydantoin-5-acetic acid can be used to determine the concentration of hydrogen in proteins through chromatographic methods.
