1-(p-Hydroxyphenyl)ethylamine is a synthetic drug that has been shown to have bactericidal properties against a number of bacterial strains. It is an acetylcholine agonist, which may be related to its pharmacokinetic profile. 1-(p-Hydroxyphenyl)ethylamine has been shown to increase the permeability of lung epithelial cells by binding with the linker region on the cell membrane. This increases the release of 5-hydroxytryptamine in tissues and leads to increased ciprofloxacin uptake in these tissues. 1-(p-Hydroxyphenyl)ethylamine also has liposomal formulations that can be used for the treatment of lung infections.
