2-Hydroxy-4-(4-methoxyphenyl)thiazole is a metal chelating agent that has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on cancer cells. It also has a peroxisomal β-oxidation activity and can be used to treat obesity in animals. 2-Hydroxy-4-(4-methoxyphenyl)thiazole has been shown to reduce the oxidative stress induced by free radicals, which may contribute to its cancer cell growth inhibition. This drug also inhibits the enzyme activities of fatty acid synthase, acetyl CoA carboxylase, and HMGCoA reductase, which are involved in the synthesis of fatty acids. These enzymes are found mainly in adipose tissue and liver cells, but not in prostate cells. The drug is not active against catalase or other peroxidases.
