1,1,1,3,3,3-Hexafluoro-2,2-bis(4-methylphenyl)propane (HFP) is a chlorofluorocarbon that is used in the production of other chemicals. It is synthesized by reacting benzyl chloride with sodium hypochlorite in the presence of pyridine. HFP is a colorless liquid with a sweet odor and an anionic character. HFP reacts with amines and alcohols to introduce an ionic group. It also reacts with copper to form copper hexafluorophosphate. The efficiency of HFP as a chlorinating agent has been found to be greater than that of chlorine or chlorine dioxide. This product can be used for the introduction of chloride into organic molecules and for the synthesis of chlorinated hydrocarbons such as dichloromethane and vinyl chloride.
