4-Hydroxymethylthiazole is an antagonist of the histamine H2 receptor. It is used in the synthesis of other drugs, and is also used as a reagent to study the activity of histamine receptors. 4-Hydroxymethylthiazole has been shown to be an operable synthetic intermediate for sulfonylurea drugs and has been used as a catalyst in oxidative reactions. The major intermediates formed from 4-hydroxymethylthiazole are N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)formamide and N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)acetamide (HPA). These compounds have been shown to be effective at blocking histamine H2 receptors.
