The 8OHQA can be synthesized from 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid by the action of xanthine oxidase and hydrogen peroxide, and it has been shown to be an inhibitor of protein synthesis. This inhibition may be due to its ability to form hydrogen bonds with the hydroxyl group on the ribose side chain and its ability to coordinate with metals. 8OHQA has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects in bladder cancer cells, which may be due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis.
