It is soluble in water and has an odor similar to that of hexane. 2,2,3,3,4,4-Hexafluoro-1,5-pentanediol is used as a chemical intermediate for the production of sodium salts and quaternary ammonium compounds. This substance can be obtained by reacting butanediol with hydrofluoric acid or trifluoromethanesulfonic acid.
