It has been shown to have a cancer-causing effect on cells in culture, and can be used as a ligand for metal ions such as copper and zinc. 4-Heptyloxybenzaldehyde also reacts with dodecyl alcohols to form chalcones, which are aromatic compounds found in plants. This reaction can be observed using optical microscopy. 4-Heptyloxybenzaldehyde forms hydrogen bonds with water molecules or other polar molecules, which can be observed by microscope techniques
