4'-Hydroxy-7-methoxyisoflavone is a p-hydroxybenzoic acid derivative that is an isoflavonoid. This compound is biosynthesized from biochanin, which in turn is synthesized from the intramolecular hydrogenation of puerarin. This process involves the formation of a covalent bond between two adjacent hydroxyl groups on the same carbon atom. The lc-ms/ms method was used to identify this compound in acetate extract. 4'-Hydroxy-7-methoxyisoflavone has been shown to inhibit osteogenic gene expression and promote bone growth in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes by inhibiting the activation of cAMP response element binding protein (CREB) and downstream CREB target genes. It also prevents the production of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), which promotes apoptosis and inhibits bone growth.
