1-(3-Hydroxyphenyl)piperazine (1HPP) is a proton-sensing molecule that is transported into cells by the dopamine transporter. It interacts with the mitochondria and causes cell apoptosis, which can be detected using hypoxia imaging. 1HPP may also affect synaptic function, growth factor activity, and serotonin levels in the central nervous system. The analytical methods for this compound are not well established, but it has been shown to react with rhodamines as a fluorescent probe and enzyme activities.
