4,5-Imidazoledicarboxylic acid is a biomimetic compound that has been shown to bind to hydroxyapatite, which is a component of bones and teeth. It also has been shown to improve locomotor activity in mice. This compound is synthesized by reacting 2-aminobenzaldehyde with diethyl malonate in the presence of sodium carbonate under basic conditions. The x-ray crystal structures of 4,5-imidazoledicarboxylic acid have revealed the intramolecular hydrogen bonds and hydrogen bonding interactions between nitrogen atoms and oxygen atoms that are present in the molecule. X-ray diffraction data was collected from crystals of 4,5-imidazoledicarboxylic acid using a CuKα radiation source at a wavelength of 1.54 Å.
