Isothiazole-5-carboxylic acid is an amide that has been synthesized from thionyl chloride and formamide. The compound is a white, crystalline solid with a melting point of about 43°C. Isothiazole-5-carboxylic acid is soluble in water and reacts with alkoxycarbonyl groups to form the corresponding amides. The compound is also used as a reagent for the preparation of chlorides, nitroalkanes, and formyl derivatives. Isothiazole-5-carboxylic acid has been shown to have potent antitumor activity against various types of cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. It has also been shown to be effective against Clostridium difficile infections.
