3-Iodophenol is a chemical compound that has been used as a fluorescent probe for biological studies. It reacts with basic proteins, such as enzymes and antibodies, to form a molecule called 3-iodophenyl ester. This reaction can be detected by the chemiluminescent reaction, which is initiated by the addition of sodium citrate. The fluorescence of 3-iodophenol can also be measured using fluorescence spectroscopy.
3-Iodophenol is synthesized from phenol and iodide in an asymmetric synthesis process. A plasma mass spectrometer was used to measure the rate of this reaction and the hydrogen bond between hydroxyl groups on the reactants was observed to be important for this process. 3-Iodophenol also reacts with halides and hydroxyl groups in organic solvents, forming acid complexes that are extracted by cationic surfactants.
