Isomitraphylline is a natural product that is chemically classified as an oxindole alkaloid. It is biosynthesized from the amino acid ornithine and may be involved in the growth of cells by acting as a growth factor. Isomitraphylline has shown antitumour and antimicrobial activities against bacterial strains such as uncaria, which are resistant to antibiotics. Isomitraphylline has also been shown to have cytotoxic effects on cervical cancer cells in vitro, but not in vivo. This drug has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of cancerous cells by interfering with DNA synthesis, protein synthesis and cell division.
