2-(1H-Indol-6-yl)acetic acid (IAA) is a naturally occurring compound that is an antiinflammatory agent. It is one of the most potent inhibitors of prostaglandin biosynthesis, with a potency comparable to indomethacin. IAA has been shown to inhibit COX enzymes in vitro and in vivo. In addition, IAA inhibits the binding of cyclooxygenase to its substrate and reduces the production of prostaglandins from arachidonic acid. IAA also has a protective effect on the retina by inhibiting lipid peroxidation, which may be due to its ability to scavenge free radicals.
