2-Iodo-5-nitropyridine is a mutagenic dyestuff that belongs to the group of pyridines. It is used as a reagent in organic synthesis, as well as in the synthesis of other dyestuffs. 2-Iodo-5-nitropyridine has been shown to be mutagenic and was found to increase the frequency of mutation at the thymidine locus in calf thymus DNA. This compound reacts with alkaline conditions and undergoes hydrolysis, producing an n-oxide and leaving a residue. The crystal structure of this compound reveals that it contains two iodides and one copper (II) ion. It has been reported that 2-iodo-5-nitropyridine can be efficiently synthesized from copper (II) iodide and nitrobenzene using an alkaline hydrolysis reaction.
