3-Isocyanatopropyltrimethoxysilane is a cross-linking agent that is used in the production of silicone rubber. It reacts with hydroxyl groups on the surface of an elastomer to form covalent linkages. 3-Isocyanatopropyltrimethoxysilane can be reacted with a variety of compounds, including aromatic hydrocarbons, aliphatic hydrocarbons, and cationic surfactants. This product has been shown to have a high resistance to chemical degradation and viscosity changes when exposed to air or moisture. FTIR spectroscopy has shown that this product is composed primarily of silicon, carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy has revealed that 3-isocyanatopropyltrimethoxysilane is an electroactive material with a small but observable free volume for ionic species such as water molecules.
