Isophaseollin is a terpenoid compound that has anti-inflammatory properties and may be useful in the treatment of skin conditions such as dandruff. Isophaseollin is a c1-6 alkoxy derivative of phaselon, which is a natural product found in the leaves of the plant Phaselous trifoliata. Isophaseollin was shown to have anti-inflammatory effects on skin cells by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis. It also acts as an antioxidant, reducing oxidative stress on cells. Isophaseollin has been shown to inhibit fungal growth, including yeast and molds such as Candida albicans, by binding to sterols in their cell membranes. It also inhibits bacteria such as Staphylococcus epidermidis. The surfactant properties of isophasellin make it useful for skin care products that are applied topically.
