3-Iodo-4-nitrophenol is a synthetically developed molecule that is used as an industrial chemical. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by binding to bacterial DNA and inhibiting RNA synthesis. It also inhibits the production of indole alkaloids, which are important for plant metabolism. 3-Iodo-4-nitrophenol is a synthetic derivative of an arbidol hydrochloride molecule, which is an analog of the natural indole alkaloid molecule dimethylamine. The synthetic arbidol molecule can be synthesized from carbon tetrachloride, with catalysis by a metal such as iron or nickel.
