It is derived from the oxidative deamination of phenylpyruvic acid, which is an intermediate in the degradation of histidine. Imidazole-4-pyruvic acid has been shown to be a product of environmental pollution and has been implicated as a cause of allergic reactions and increased levels of histamine. This substance may also be responsible for epileptic seizures in some people. Imidazole-4-pyruvic acid can be detected using monoclonal antibodies against figlu, which binds to this compound.
