2-Iodo-D-phenylalanine is a diagnostic agent that is used to diagnose bladder cancer. It reacts with the amino group of l-amino acids and isomers to form a complex that can be detected by spectrophotometric methods. 2-Iodo-D-phenylalanine has been shown to have an uptake rate of over 90% in tumour cells, higher than any other amino acid. The reaction of 2-iodo-D-phenylalanine with amino acids or oncologic drugs results in the formation of phenylpyruvic acid, which can be measured quantitatively by spectrophotometry. This product has been shown to be effective against a variety of tumour cell lines, including bladder cancer and prostate cancer cell lines.
