2-Iodo-1-methyl-3-nitrobenzene is an active compound that is used in chromatographic analysis. It has a high melting point and it is soluble in organic solvents. 2-Iodo-1-methyl-3-nitrobenzene can be used as a ligand to bind to nitrotoluene, which is then converted into biphenyl by the addition of amines and hydrochloric acid. 2-Iodo-1-methyl-3-nitrobenzene can be synthesized with a homochiral starting material, which produces an enantiomer with a chiral center. This reaction requires the use of thioethers and results in less than 5% yield.
