5-Iodo-2-methylpyridine is a triazole compound that is structurally related to the carboline class of compounds. The 5-iodo group in this compound is used as a reactive functional group for the synthesis of other chemical compounds. 5-Iodo-2-methylpyridine has been shown to react with 4-iodopyridine by displacing the bromine atom and forming an intermediate that undergoes a sequence of reactions with magnesium, 2-bromothiophene, lysine residues, and dimebon. This reaction has been shown to be mechanistic and linker independent.
