It is a potential optical sensor in diagnostic testing and has been shown to be an optimal reactant with optical sensors. 2-Isonitrosopropiophenone has been shown to form a complex with copper ions, which are necessary for the oxidation of sulfonic acids. The reaction mechanism involves the formation of hydrogen chloride, which reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce hydrochloric acid and water. This reaction proceeds by way of intermolecular hydrogen bonding between reactive groups on the 2-Isonitrosopropiophenone molecule and reactive sites on the copper ion.
