The compound is used as an intermediate for organic synthesis and for research purposes. 5-Iodo-2-methoxybenzoic acid methyl ester has been shown to be an inhibitor of transcription, translation, and RNA processing in cell culture experiments. This drug also blocks the replication of DNA by binding to the enzyme DNA polymerase, thereby preventing DNA replication.
