Khayanthone is a polyphenolic compound that has been shown to have neuroprotective effects in vitro. It has been shown to inhibit the production of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and serum enzymes, such as dismutase activity, in mice with lung cancer. This drug also has a toxic effect on respiratory system cells, which may be due to its ability to induce apoptosis. Khayanthone has also been found to have bactericidal properties against Borrelia species and other bacteria. Khayanthone belongs to the family Rutaceae and Meliaceae genera and is an oxidation product of ellagitannins.
