It is one of the major hormones involved in the regulation of the menstrual cycle and ovulation. The levels of this hormone increase during ovulation, with maximal concentration occurring at midcycle. 3-Keto-7a,12a-dihydroxy-5a-cholanic acid is converted by enzymes into estradiol and testosterone. 3-Keto-7a,12a-dihydroxy-5a-cholanic acid may also be involved in regulating peptide hormones and pheromones.
