a-Ketobutyric acid sodium salt is a chemical compound that is used as a substrate in the study of the enzyme glutamate dehydrogenase. It is also used to investigate the mechanism of action of denaturing agents and their effects on human serum transport. The rate of metabolism of a-ketobutyric acid sodium salt was increased by dinitrofluorobenzene, which acts as an allosteric inhibitor. This inhibition may be due to binding with chloride ions, preventing them from participating in the reaction, or by competing with other substrates for binding sites on the enzyme. There is evidence that glutamic acid and glutamine are involved in the uptake process. The binding site for these amino acids may be different from those found for chloride ions.
